#36 C40 and City Diplomacy

The C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group is an association of 97 cities from around the world, aimed at fighting climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, thus mitigating climate risks. The group represents one-twelfth of the world population and a quarter of the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The goal of the C40’s initiative is to reduce the emissions of its member cities by half within a decade. Membership to the group comes from performance-based requirements.

We had with us Catrin Robertsen, Head of Climate Budgeting at C40 Cities and Shruti Narayan, Regional Director South and West Asia at C40 Cities.

We asked Catrin and Shruti the following questions:

  • Can you tell us about C40 and its work?
  • How does C40 use city diplomacy to help cities meet their climate ambitions?
  • Cities earn their membership through their actions and both of you work with two very different cities - Mumbai and Oslo.

-  Can you explain the kind of work being done by Mumbai to address the issue?

- What are the key lessons that Mumbai can share with the world?

  - What does Oslo do to align with C40's requirements?

  • Can you explain what climate budgeting means? How does C40 facilitate this peer-to-peer knowledge sharing on climate budgeting, based on experiences from Oslo.
  • What do you see as a priority for C40 in the coming years?
  • Where do you see C40 in the year 2050?
