The Nordic Region: A Leader in Green Innovation and Economic Prosperity

Sunder highlighted the following points about the Nordic region:

  • The Nordic region boasts one of the largest economies in the world.
  • It ranks among the richest globally in terms of per capita GDP.
  • According to the World Bank, all five Nordic countries are among the top 20 countries in the world for renewable energy production per capita.
  • These countries have made significant commitments to achieving a sustainable and green economy, setting ambitious targets to reduce carbon emissions and increase the use of renewable energy sources.

Examples of Successful Green Collaborations between the Nordic Region and India

  • Vestas (Denmark) and India: Vestas, a Danish wind turbine manufacturer, has been active in India for several years, contributing to the growth of wind energy in the country. They have installed numerous wind turbines and continue to support India's renewable energy targets.
  • Scatec (Norway) and India: Scatec, a Norwegian renewable energy company, has partnered with Indian firms to develop large-scale solar power projects.
  • ABB (Sweden/Switzerland) and India: ABB, with its significant presence in India, has been involved in various smart grid projects that improve the efficiency and reliability of the Indian power grid.
  • Fortum (Finland) and India: Fortum has been working on waste-to-energy projects in India, helping to convert municipal waste into clean energy. This not only reduces landfill waste but also provides a sustainable energy source.
  • Danish Energy Agency and India: The Danish Energy Agency has collaborated with Indian stakeholders to promote bioenergy development, including the use of agricultural waste and other biomass resources to produce clean energy, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
  • City Collaborations: Nordic cities like Copenhagen and Stockholm have partnered with Indian cities to share knowledge and best practices in sustainable urban development, focusing on areas such as public transportation, waste management, and green buildings. In 2019, Oslo was also named the Climate City of Europe.

The Nordic region's innovative approaches and successful collaborations with India demonstrate a strong commitment to sustainable development and green technology.
